Interview with Romance Author Lexi Ostrow

 Lexi Ostrow

Making Worlds Collide

USA Today Bestselling Author Lexi Ostrow has been in love with the written word since second grade when her librarian started a writing club. Born in sunny southern California she’s spent time in various places across the country and is not-so-patiently waiting for the USCG to return her to New Orleans. Mom to a toddler and an array of pets, her house is never lacking stories to tell.

Lexi has been a writer ever since the second grade in some form or another. Getting her degree in creative writing and her master’s in journalism she couldn’t wait to get a chance to put her fantasies down on paper. From paranormal romance to thriller there isn’t a genre she doesn’t love to spend her time reading or writing. With her BA in creative writing from UCR and her MA in multi-media Journalism from Emerson College, she’s ready to take on the literary world one novel at a time.

Reading and writing are her first loves, but her passion for shopping, love for yummy food and her love for all her many pets are not far behind. Lexi is an enthusiastic Whovian and DC Comic Show lover who isn’t afraid to talk someone’s ear off about them. She hopes to one day help other readers fall in love with writing as she did.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

1.       What was the first story you ever wrote? (Unpublished or published) The Snowflake Who Lived in California. I was in second grade and it was about 50 typed pages :D

2.       Why did you want to become an author? I’ve been in love with losing myself in books since I was in kindergarten. It made me want to help others have that same escape. The constant fantasies chattering around in my head doesn’t hurt either, though.

3.       What is your favorite treat when you are writing? I don’t eat when I write, but I absolutely will devour a bag of Flaming Hot Cheetos if I’m editing.

4.       Do you have any writing rituals you do to get in the mood? I do not. I spend most of the day trying to mentally capture the scenes I have inappropriately playing in my mind when I should be doing other things so I just sit down and jump in.

5.       Is there any type of scenes you shy away from writing about? Hmm, there really aren’t any. I know my weakest scenes are action. No matter how many battles I write, I always worry I rush them or they’re not realistic enough. I normally don’t get over that until the book is out into the world and I read it after a few months of stepping away from it.

6.       What is a genre you don’t currently write but would like to try? Romantic Suspense. I live for Heather Graham and similar authors but have never felt I could create my own mystery strong enough to keep people reading – even though I watch and read them all the time.

7.       Why do you write in the genre you currently write in? Escape. I genre hop, and just recently completed the epilogue on a steampunk romance. For me, steampunk allows me to play with history and add some spark and magic into it.

8.       What is the most difficult hurdle you’ve had to get over while writing so far? Imposter Syndrome. I don’t get very much engagement on social media when I post book things – whether it’s teasers or announcements, I just don’t have the support system. It makes me constantly worry it’s because I’m not good enough – either as an author or a friend – but then I’ll post something silly about my life and people are there so it really just enforces worry I’m not authoring correctly.

9.       What is your dream for your book? (Ie: movie, in big box stores, etc) To get to Grand Central Romance.

10.   Who would you have play your main characters if you could pick anyone in the world (dead or alive)? I don’t fantasy cast a lot because I worry I’ll start to plant traits I know from a movie or a social profile. That said, I’m starting on a super secret Arthurian project and I for sure need Jake Stormoen to be my Lancelot, Abigail Spencer to be Gwen, Reece Richie to be Merlin, and Aaron Ashmore to be King Arthur.

11.   What is your favorite coffee/or tea? I’m basic – pumpkin spice fraps are the only coffee I drink and tea is reserved for when I have a cold.

12.   What would you put in a cocktail that represents your latest release? Ooh I love this questions … and have absolutely no idea. So, I’m cheating and googled steampunk themed cocktail and realized it would need to have Absinthe.

13.   A fire alarm goes off in your home. What are the first 5 things you grab? Assuming my kiddo and pets can get out on their own – my laptop, my cell phone, the box of our family pet ashes, and my wedding bands if I’m not wearing them.

14.    Do you use a spoon or fork to eat macaroni and cheese? Fork because I’m a giant child and like to the slip the noodles over the prongs :D

15.   What are you currently binge watching/or listening to? I just started “The Irregulars” on Netflix and I’m enjoying it!

16.   What do you think is the perfect girls night out? I’m very much a dichotomy on nights on. On one hand, give me loud pumping music, sequin dresses, terrible drinks, and high heels and I’m in heaven. On the other, I’ve grown quite content just heading out back with the girls and some drinks to chat.

17.   When you were little what was your favorite toy that you took everywhere? A little lamb (that I shaved thinking the fur would grow back),wrapped in my baby blankie.

18.   What is something your readers don’t know about you? That I’ve never actually watched a porn to check and see if my sex scenes work outside my imagination LOL

19.   Who is your favorite all time author? Do you own any of their books? I cannot pick just one – Heather Graham and Larissa Ione are a tie. I do own all books from each, some took forever to hunt down, too!

20.   If you could interview anyone in the world who would you choose? And Why? I’d love to get in front of any TV Exec and make them spell out exactly why they cancel shows that are absolutely resonating with fans.
